🇸🇪 Högst upp på den mäktiga västra landborgen på Öland växer ett träd. Det är ingen lätt plats att växa på där trädet har slagit sina rötter. Jordlagret är tunt, nederbörden sparsam och vinden från havet blåser mer eller mindre ständigt genom grenarna. Klippbranten ned mot stranden är bandad av de översta lagren av den berggrund som bygger upp Öland. Överst kalkstenen som bidragit till många ölänningars försörjning genom århundradena. Under kalstenen ett lager alunskiffer med inlagrad orsten, som också kallas stinksten eftersom det luktar petrolium när man bryter, eller slår isär den. De översta lagren vilar på en mäktigt lager av grå lerskiffer och under detta, långt under markytan, finns sandstenen.

🇬🇧 A tree grows at the top of the mighty western cliff coast of NW Öland, Sweden’s second largest island. The place where the tree has settled its roots is not an easy place to grow. The soil is thin, the precipitation is sparse and the wind from the sea blows more or less relentlessly through the branches. The cliff beneath the tree is striped with the top layers of the bedrock that constitutes the island. At the very top is limestone, the stone that has contributed to the livelihoods of many over the centuries as limestone from Öland is found in many buildings in Northern Europe. Below the limestone is a layer of alum shale blended with anthraconite, also called stinkstone because it smells of petroleum when breaking apart. The top layers rest on a thick layer of gray clay slate and beneath, far below the ground surface, lies the sandstone.
